Tour of Heian Jingu Shrine

The shrine was established in 1895 as a shrine enshrining several gods for the citizens, marking the 1,100th anniversary of the capital’s move to Heian-kyo. It enshrines Emperor Kanmu and Emperor Komei. The bright vermilion buildings, including the Otenmon Gate and the Daigokuden Hall, modeled after the main halls of the former imperial palace, stand out for their distinctive design. The garden, designated a Place of Scenic Beauty, is a traditional-style garden featuring a path around a pond and spans approximately 30,000 square meters.

The temple serves as the head temple of the Nanzen-ji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. It was founded in 1291 by the monk Mukan Fumon (later known as Daimin Kokushi), who was granted the former imperial villa of Emperor Kameyama. The temple grounds are laid out in a straight line, featuring major buildings such as the Chokushi Gate, the Sanmon Gate (an Important Cultural Property), the Dharma Hall, and the Hojo (Main Hall), which is designated a National Treasure. Twelve smaller sub-temples are arranged around the main complex.
