The museum was established in 1998 and is based on the collections of the third successor of the Hosomi family, which originated with Kokoan Hosomi (1901-1979), an industrialist and collector of Japanese art.
The collection encompasses a wide range of Japanese art genres and periods, including Shinto and Buddhist art, art associated with the tea ceremony, as well as Edo-period (1603-1868) paintings from the Rinpa school and Ito Jakuchu.
The museum hosts a variety of exhibitions centered around its collection.
