Built in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of Kyoto’s founding as the capital, this shrine was created as a place of worship for the people of the city.
The striking vermilion buildings, inspired by the ceremonial halls of ancient Heian-kyo, capture the refined elegance of Kyoto’s imperial past.
